We're down to the top 25 and I summarized the next half of the list as the movies I will, hands down, see no matter what. I will plop down some money for all of these movies, regardless of the negative reviews or word of mouth. Some of these are going to be instant classics, while others might just be spectacular failures. But you won't know until you actually go see them for yourselves. And so to begin the top 25 is a movie from the director of one of my all-time favorite movies, Wet Hot American Summer.

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2011: Surprises and guarantees.

As I continue to count down (getting near the top 25!), I've noticed that among the movies I'm getting excited about, there are always a few movies that I just will avoid at all costs. Take, for example, Zookeeper. It's a Kevin James vehicle geared towards the family. They might as well call it Night at the Zoo, because I'm sure they're rehashing the same idea. Prom is another one - maybe I'm getting old, but I don't remember prom being such a big deal. It was a big fancy dance, but the culmination of my four years in high school? Not really. It looks like High School Musical 4 without all that music to get in the way of teen melodrama. And then there's the never-asked-for sequels coming out: Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son, Spy Kids 4 and Final Destination 5. Why can't they stop? It's not like those movies are going to rake in big money. It's just lazy filler for the studios. Uggh, I'm getting depressed thinking about this, so let's move on to the next five!

It's getting down to the real money makers. And while I think the next five on this list will no doubt generate some money, it remains to be seen if they're going to be blockbusters. They all have potential to rake in the money - especially because they don't release in the crowded summer season. I think February is already looking great and it's only going to get better from there!

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2011: The next five!

Car chases, Clash of the Titans Redux, conspiracy theories, werewolves and murderous employees! I've gone over my list a few times (I'm still re-writing my top 25 choices - it's too damn hard!) and I've noticed that only 17 movies in my Top 50 are sequels, remakes or franchise movies. Everything else is either original or comes from a book/source material. So whenever someone comes up to me and complains about how unoriginal Hollywood is, I just point out that first of all, nothing is original these days. And second, that's not the point of movies - it's how the story is told and what makes it exciting or fresh. Sure, there's lots of alien-themed movies next year and superhero movies, but most of them are interesting takes on the genre. Of course it remains to be seen if any of them will be any good, but I'm so excited. And I just can't hide it. Hence the blog.

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2011: Always looking ahead.

2010 wasn't exactly a banner year for movies. Don't get me wrong, I loved quite a few movies this year, but looking back, most of the year's releases were largely forgettable. I'm still looking forward to a few holiday releases, namely Tron: Legacy and True Grit, but other than that? Toy Story 3 and Harry Potter were the big franchise highlights that carried the year. There weren't any really big surprises (as far as the box office is concerned) and there were definitely more disappointments this year than I can remember. Iron Man 2, Salt, Robin Hood, The Sorcerer's Apprentice are just a few movies that I personally was looking forward to that ended up being just okay. I wouldn't say those were bad movies, just expectations were fairly high and they didn't deliver. Then when the movies sucked, they sucked so hard that they, ummm, just blew. Physically impossible? Not for Sex and the City 2, Grown Ups, Percy Jackson and Edge of Darkness.
This agonizingly slow year only has me salivating for 2011 already. I keep trying to read up on movies coming out next year, but sadly, the interwebs don't do justice to what is going to be, I think, a great, if not awesome year in movies. Sometimes the buildup to a movie is just as great as watching it. That's why I love movie trailers - they're little nuggets of joy that help build up that anticipation. Sometimes the trailers are so much better than the actual movie (Terminator: Salvation, anyone?). So, like a good striptease, I'm starting slow and building up to list the 50 MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF 2011! Yes, I think there is a potential for 50 really good to great to mind-numbingly awesome movies that quite possibly will blow some socks and other garments off your face. Obviously some of these movies are going to be just guesses as we can only gather so much information about a movie until it's out - especially those that aren't coming out until later in the summer or next holiday. But I think all of these movies have a chance at greatness. I'm sure some will disappoint and hopefully there will be a bevy of surprises that won't even be on this list! Who knows? 2011 can, at it's worst, be better than this year.

Ahh...the 90s part 2
The 90s had its fair share of one-hit wonders. Every time I thought I was done with the list a new song would pop up! It's crazy - but these songs will forever be remembered in my mind as quintessential 90s.

Part of ck's 90s week.
I have very fond memories of the 90s. At least, pop culture in the 90s. Not necessarily my own life - having cancer really doesn't count as fond memories. But I enjoyed all the attention I got! And it catapulted me into being class president my sophomore year. I got a lot of sympathy votes for being that "cancer boy." But I knew my real calling wasn't as a leader. My calling was of a slacker-type that personified the fabulous last decade of the 20th century.
What started this nostalgia-induced rant? I watched VH1's Top 100 Song of the 90s. I must have missed it two (!) years ago. And you can tell it was from two years ago because there's a lot of shit that's happened since that brief time and I felt weirdly out of sync when they mentioned there's a film about Notorious B.I.G. in the works. Hellloooo?! And as much I enjoyed sitting down with the Magster and reminiscing, there were obvious holes in the top 100. I mean, there's no Smashing Pumpkins song at all? And Mariah Carey's best song from the 90s was Vision of Love. Puh-lease. I have a better list.

PS3 - Naughty Dog
I'm a little late to the game on this (pun intended) - but this is by far one of those game that will forever stick out in my mind. It's just such a visceral experience that is up there with the best games I've ever played.
I will admit I am a total nerd when it comes to games. I tend to really get involved with one game at a time and I try to finish that game before moving on to the next (although there are a few exceptions - Sonic Unleashed comes to mind, but that's a whole other post!). Plus, I'm always 6 months to a year behind releases because I really can't budget $60 for a game every month or two. My favorite games involve a good story and characters that follow a cinematic structure. These games typically suck you into the environment not only with the story, but with clever gameplay and excellent pacing. Uncharted 2 has all these elements and it's one hell of a ride. There's one particular level where you're on a train barreling through the jungle and it's a perfect metaphor for the whole game.
