Most Anticipated: Catching Up

It's been quite a while since the last post and I need to catch y'all up to the movies I've seen - and to grade my Most Anticipated movies! Instead of doing a review, I'm just going to sum up most of the movies in two or three sentences and hand out a grade - these are in chronological order (as to when I've seen them). Also, I will be re-ranking them (some won't even make the top 50) and I'll be doing a year-end list with newer movies that didn't make it the first time around. Stay tuned!

The Roommate (PG-13) - Runtime: 91 minutes
Starring: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester
Director: Christian E. Christiansen
Orginal Rank: 43

A decent, if largely unforgettable Single White Female clone. This time it's rated PG-13 and it ultimately hurt this movie. It could have been way more interesting and some parts were just boring!

Rating: Not Worth Paying For!

Hall Pass (R) - Runtime: 105 minutes
Starring: Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis
Director: Bobby and Peter Farrelly
Original Rank: 35

A really funny and raunchy comedy from the guys that did There's Something About Mary. Jason Sudeikis is on fire this year and he's quickly becoming one of my favorite comic actors.
Rating: Rent It!

The Adjustment Bureau (PG-13) - Runtime: 106 minutes
Starring: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt
Director: George Nolfi

Original Ranking: 24

A fun and exciting romance/thriller with a great cast of characters. Some may come away from this movie baffled at its convoluted plot, but it's enjoyable despite its flaws. Plus the ending was clever enough to keep me guessing.

Rating: Rent It!

Limitless (PG-13) - Runtime: 105 minutes
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro
Director: Neil Burger
Original Ranking: 45

A big surprise as the ranking really doesn't reflect how good this movie is. A great thriller and Bradley Cooper oozes charm throughout. Maggie remarked "I didn't think the production value would be this high!" It's a fun movie and Neil Burger adds a great visual flair to the whole proceeding.

Rating: Rent It!

The Lincoln Lawyer (R) - Runtime: 118 minutes
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Phillipe
Director: Brad Furman
Original Ranking: 41

This movie is going to be bumped up in the rankings quite a bit. It's a great drama and legal thriller where Matthew McConaughey is at his best. They don't make too many of these movies for big releases anymore but this one shines - a must-see.

Rating: Rent It!

Paul (R) - Runtime: 109 minutes
Starring: Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Seth Rogen (voice)
Director: Greg Mottola
Original Ranking: 34

I think the ranking fits for this movie. It's a fun and funny movie, no doubt, but I didn't think "Instant Classic" like I did with Frost/Pegg's other two movies (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead). Still, it's a solid comedy and definitely worth checking out when it hits DVD in August.
Rating: Rent It!

Sucker Punch (PG-13) - Runtime: 110 minutes
Starring: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone
Director: Zack Snyder
Original Ranking: 5

A lot of people absolutely despised this movie, but I had the complete opposite reaction. This is a great movie and I think ten or so years down the road it's still going to be great! The action is not just great, it's amazing and the plot, while some dismissed at misogynistic and cliched, I thought it was clever and just plain fun.
Rating: Own It!

Source Code (PG-13) - Runtime: 93 minutes
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan
Director: Duncan Jones
Original Ranking: 2

Yes! This movie was simply amazing and near-perfect. From the opening shots of Chicago's roadways to the end shot of Cloud Gate, it's a gripping, Groundhog Day-esque thrill ride. I loved every shot and it's certainly one of my favorite movies this year.
Rating: Own It!

Scream 4 (R) - Runtime: 111 minutes
Starring: Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts
Director: Wes Craven
Original Ranking: 10

Despite all the bad reviews and disappointing box office numbers, Scream 4 is just as good as the original. The kills are just as awesome (and sometimes very funny) and the ending will leave you speechless. It's a bit messy at times, but it's all effortlessly done and I can't wait to see this one again when it's out in October on DVD.
Rating: Own It!

Fast Five (PG-13) - Runtime: 130 minutes
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson
Director: Justin Lin
Original Ranking: 40

A complete surprise not just for myself, but for the box office as well. While the fourth movie kick-started the franchise again, Fast Five completely rocketed it into outer space. This one is by far the best of the five movies - it's a tightly written and expertly executed heist movie. And the ending, oh man, the ending - stay after the credits! I cannot wait for the next one!
Rating: Rent It!

There's at least 10 or more movies I need to review - so stay tuned for future posts!
